Review:
The Anunnaki (2025) is a visually breathtaking, thought-provoking sci-fi epic that dives deep into ancient myth, cosmic mystery, and humanity’s forgotten origins. Directed by visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, the film blends history, science fiction, and spiritual philosophy into an immersive cinematic journey that feels as intimate as it is otherworldly.

The story follows Dr. Elias Kareem (Oscar Isaac), a brilliant but disgraced archaeologist who uncovers an ancient artifact beneath the sands of Iraq—one that doesn’t belong to any known civilization. As global phenomena begin disrupting Earth’s magnetic field, Elias is recruited by a shadowy agency that believes the artifact is not only alien, but a key to awakening a long-dormant race known as the Anunnaki—beings once worshipped as gods by early humans.

Eva Green plays Dr. Selene Ward, a linguist and mythologist who helps decipher the ancient language embedded in the artifact. Her chemistry with Isaac adds emotional weight and tension, especially as the team begins experiencing strange visions and time slips tied to the Anunnaki’s return.

Mahershala Ali is chilling as the antagonist—a billionaire technocrat who believes merging with Anunnaki tech will elevate humanity into godhood. Florence Pugh brings emotional vulnerability and fierce intelligence as a field scientist caught between science and faith.

The film’s scope is massive, spanning ancient Sumerian temples, underground alien vaults in Antarctica, and an awe-inspiring finale on a lunar base that hides a cosmic gate. Cinematographer Greig Fraser crafts stunning visuals: swirling star maps, dark red skies over Babylon, and the towering silhouettes of the Anunnaki themselves—majestic, terrifying, and utterly unforgettable.

Villeneuve’s direction is masterful, balancing quiet philosophical moments with colossal sci-fi spectacle. The themes—free will vs. destiny, knowledge vs. belief, power vs. responsibility—are delivered with depth, not preachiness.

The film’s haunting final line, whispered by an awakened Anunnaki, sends shivers:
“We shaped your bones. Now you must shape your soul.”

Ambitious, haunting, and visually stunning—The Anunnaki is a new benchmark in sci-fi cinema. A myth reborn for a generation ready to question everything.
