Review:
The Reader is a haunting, intimate, and morally complex drama that explores guilt, love, and memory in post-war Germany. Directed with aching sensitivity by Stephen Daldry, the film unfolds like a slow-burning confession, daring its audience to confront uncomfortable truths about justice, forgiveness, and the emotional scars we carry.

The story follows Michael Berg (David Kross/Ralph Fiennes), a young man who, as a teenager in 1958, has a passionate affair with Hanna Schmitz (Kate Winslet)—a mysterious, older woman with strict rules and deep emotional walls. Their connection is physical, emotional, and literary: she insists he read to her aloud each time they meet, from The Odyssey to The Lady with the Little Dog.

But Hanna disappears suddenly, leaving Michael heartbroken. Years later, as a law student attending a Nazi war crimes trial, he is stunned to see Hanna on trial—accused of atrocities committed while serving as a concentration camp guard.

Kate Winslet is astonishing as Hanna—cold and guarded on the surface, but unraveling with quiet vulnerability as her secrets are exposed. Her performance, which earned her an Academy Award, walks the tightrope between sympathy and condemnation.
